1 Million Liter Diesal Storage Tank of Inter-Century Sdn Bhd Project: 1Million Liter Diesel Storage Tank Location: Kemaman Supply Base Applicator: Aliran Luas Sdn. Bhd. / Seahorse Services Sdn. Bhd. Date of Application: July 2003 The Challenge: This 60 feet high above ground diesel storage tank with an outside diameter of 50 feet shall undergo a general maintenance after five years in service. Corrosion had set in on all sections of the tank from top to bottom concentrating on the weld joints, in way of bolt and nuts and back of angulars. The owner will not allow dry grit blasting for safety and environmental implications. They intend to employ an alternative surface preparation method with greater production rate and a coating that can be applied any time of the day, as they need the tank to be in service at once. Solution: Corro-Dur 561 applied on weld joints The Corro-Dur system was chosen among other coating competitors since it can adhere well on the existing sound epoxy coatings after it was prepared using an ultra high - pressure water jet at a pressure range from 15,000 psi to 30,000 psi. The coating can be applied simultaneously with the water jet in operation inside the tank since it an odorless, solvent-free, no humidity limits and adheres well on damp or wet surfaces. Corro-Dur 561 was used to fill up the gaps between the roof plate and the topmost shell plate that exhibits rust stains. Also build up corrosion pits and angle bar edges / outside corners with Corro-Dur 561 and finally topcoat the internal areas with Corro-Dur 258. The external areas were coated with Corro-Dur 192 and top coated with a UV resistant coating. Result: The Corro-Dur coatings in conjunction with ultra high - pressure water jet preparation proves to be a fast and efficient way to rehabilitate a tank. In no time at all, the tank is back in its normal activities providing fuel to its customers.
