Crude Oil Riser of a leading Malaysian oil company

Project: Crude Oil Risers

Location: Semarang Platform, Offshore Sabah, Malaysia.

Applicator: Eastern Energy Services Sdn Bhd

Date Of Application: March 2000

The Challenge:

CRUDE Oil risers on board Semarang Platform had a leak on the risers & were temporarily sealed with clamp & Class G cement. The area of the riser from the splash Zone to app 5 meters above were severely corroded due to the constant exposure to the moist Salt laden atmosphere, Conventional repair & maintenance could not be carried out due to the operating temperature of 90 deg. C & the presence of moisture due to tidal & wave movement which hinders in the application of conventional Patching system.

Requirement:

Ø       Repair rectification to be carried out in a very short planned shut down & not to exceed 24 hrs

Ø       System Specified to be able to seal the leak & be able to withstand an operating pressure of minimum 800 psi,

Ø       All corroded areas to be rebuilt  & protected up to a depth of 1.5 meters from the lowest tide level & to a total height of 7 meters

System Specification:

1.       Leaks

Ø       Prepare surface to ST 2/3 standards

Ø       Seal leak with a temporary plug

Ø       Seal Temporary plug & surrounding areas with Corro-Dur 911, a 5 min surface tolerant epoxy

Ø       Apply a coat of Corro-Dur 561 to even the surface & to distribute the load & wrap with Corro-Wrap A water activated wrapping composite system to the no of required wraps to withstand 800 psi operating pressure

Ø       Finish with 1 coat of Corro-Dur 258

2.) General Corroded area & splash Zone area

Ø       Prepare surface to St2/3 standards

Ø       Apply Corro-Dur 561 onto the pitted areas until even

Ø       Apply a second coat of Corro-Dur 561 to a minimum of 500 microns

Ø       Finish with Corro-Dur 258 to a minimum of 300 microns

Conclusion:

The above exercise was completed in 12 hrs & allowed to cure for another 8 hrs before being put back into operation.
