Single Anchor Leg Mooring of leading international oil company in Peninsula Malaysia.

Project: Single Anchor Leg Mooring (SALM BUOY)

Location: Kemaman, Terengganu, Malaysia

Applicator: Haven Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd

Date of Applicator: July 2000

The Challenge:

SALM is used primarily to hold crude oil transfer hoses afloat at sea for better loading procedures.  Crude oil from the floating production storage-offloading unit (FPSO) is transferred to shipping vessels (Crude Carriers) for delivery to the designated refinery. It has to undergo rehabilitation due to corrosion that is visible on the back of angle bars, bulb plates, corners, edges and hard to reach areas. During its service, this minute corrosion started creeping on the steel substrate and finally dislodging the solvent type-epoxy tank coating. The applicators were not able to apply the coating properly mainly for reasons like there is not enough lighting, good ventilation and the complexity of the structure. EPMI needs a coating that is fast curing, environment friendly, corrosion resistant and can be applied even during high humidity.

Requirement:

For optimum performance, the solvent-free Corro-Dur 258 was recommended since it is safe to use in confined spaces. Applicators can work inside the tank longer with no obnoxious odor from the coating since it is 100 % solids and does not contain Volatile Organic Compounds (0% VOC). The two (2) coat system was applied on an abrasive blasted surface at 300-500 microns per coat gives the tank a strong, durable, corrosion and chemical resistant lining that will withstand long term constant submersion without blistering or peeling. The surface preparation /coating application was completed within 18 hours and this can be attributed to its fast re-coating period.
