External Areas of Tank of a leading Malaysian oil company
Project: External Areas Of Tank # 67
Location: Miri Crude Oil Terminal (MCOT),
Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia.
Applicator: Eastern Energy Services Sdn. Bhd.
Date Of Application: October 1999
The Challenge:
Steel plates of this tank were joined using rivets
and alkyd coatings applied on rivet heads and in between lap joints
starts to break after some time due to movements and exposure
to petrochemical environment. Corrosion is visible in these breaks
and later on becomes an eyesore due to rust stains thus making
the external surface of the tank looks old and dirty. At the same
time, corrosion at rivet heads continues and it will end up a
big problem. The client wants a coating that will seal or fill
the gap in between the rivets and the steel plate for a longer
protection so that they will not repaint the entire area almost
every year.
The Recommendation:
Corro-Dur
257 was applied on abrasive blasted surface in way of the rivet
heads and lap joints. Then a thicker coating of Corro-Dur 561
was applied around the rivet heads to permanent seal the gaps
between the rivet and the steel plate. A third coat of Corro-Dur
257 was again applied prior to topcoat application of self-cleaning
alkyd paint. Corro-Dur was chosen because of its unique qualities
especially as filler and a shorter re-coating period speeds up
the painting process.
